|Context of Our Work|
The Bronx is the poorest urban county in the United States. FBHC provides the majority of its services to Bronx Community Districts 5, 6, and 7. These districts contain some of the lowest median household incomes in NYC. Community District 6 has the highest poverty rate in the city and Community District 5 is third.
Our residents, as a group, pay the highest share of their income towards rent for housing that contains more serious housing code violations than anywhere else in the city. Still, the demand for affordable housing continues to grow. Community Board 7 has the highest concentration of rent-regulated apartments in the city. Board 5’s vacancy rate is less than 3% with much of that vacancy created by evictions. The high demand is exemplified by housing lotteries for new low-income housing that at times have attracted over one hundred applications for each available apartment.
For the past 30 years, Fordham Bedford has strived to provide safe and sound housing at affordable rates for low to moderate income families. We now manage close to one hundred apartment buildings and serve thousands of families in the northwest Bronx. As the need for housing rises, we will continue to look for innovative ways to create and preserve housing in our area.
